Chips Happen: How to Handle a Chipped Tooth

August 6, 2024

Chipping a tooth can be an alarming experience, but knowing what to do in the moment can prevent further damage and help you recover more smoothly. At Vacca Family Dentistry in Midlothian, VA, we want you to feel confident handling dental emergencies—including minor tooth fractures—until you can get professional care. Below is a practical, dentist-approved guide on what to do if you chip a tooth.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Assess the Damage

The first step is to stay calm and examine your mouth. Minor chips may not hurt initially, but even small damage can lead to complications if left untreated. If the chip is large or you're in pain, contact your dentist right away.

Step 2: Rinse with Warm Water

Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to remove debris or tooth fragments and reduce the risk of infection. This also helps you get a clearer view of the affected area.

If you notice bleeding, apply light pressure using clean gauze or a soft cloth. You can also place a cold compress on the outside of your mouth to minimize swelling and discomfort.

Avoid applying ice or very cold water directly to the chipped tooth—this can increase

sensitivity and pain.

Step 3: Protect Your Mouth from Sharp Edges

If the chipped tooth has a rough or sharp edge, it may irritate your tongue, lips, or cheeks. Until you can see your dentist, you can cover the area with a piece of orthodontic wax (available at most pharmacies). This creates a temporary barrier and prevents additional soft tissue injury.

Step 4: Manage Pain (If Needed)

You can take over-the-counter pain relief, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to help with discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can cause irritation or chemical burns.

Step 5: Schedule an Appointment with Your Dentist

Even if your tooth doesn't hurt, it’s essential to schedule an exam. A professional evaluation ensures there’s no hidden damage or risk of infection. At Vacca Family Dentistry, we offer gentle, timely care to restore the function and appearance of your smile.

Treatment options may include:

  • Dental bonding for small chips
  • Porcelain veneers for esthetic concerns
  • Crowns or root canal therapy for more severe fractures

Delaying care can lead to tooth decay, sensitivity, or structural weakening, so early treatment is key.
