Signs You May Need Emergency Dental Care

When something doesn’t feel right with your smile, it’s important to know when it’s more than “just wait and see.” If you’re dealing with severe tooth pain, swelling in your gums or face, a knocked-out or broken tooth, bleeding that won’t stop, or signs of infection like fever or a bad taste in your mouth, it’s time to call an emergency dentist. Are you experiencing any of the following?

  • Severe toothache or sudden, intense pain that doesn't go away
  • Knocked-out or loose tooth due to injury or trauma
  • Cracked, chipped, or broken tooth causing pain or sharp edges
  • Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw, especially if accompanied by fever
  • Lost or damaged filling, crown, or dental appliance causing discomfort or sensitivity

Your comfort and peace of mind are always our priority.

Lost Filling or Crown

Call your dentist as soon as possible. If you can locate your crown or filling, gently rinse it under water. If denture adhesive is available, a small amount can be used to temporarily place it back over the tooth. This is only a short-term solution, so please contact our Midlothian dental office promptly so we can properly repair or replace the restoration and prevent further damage.

When in doubt, don't hesitate to reach out to our office at (804) 739-9191. We care.

Common Dental Emergencies

Knocked-out Tooth

Call your dentist immediately. If possible, locate the tooth and handle it carefully by the crown (the top part of the tooth), not the root. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it under running water—do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue.

If you can, try to carefully place the tooth back into its socket. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk and bring it with you to the dentist right away. Avoid touching or biting down on the area where the tooth came out.

If there is swelling or trauma to the mouth, apply a cold compress or a wet towel to the outside of the area. Then proceed immediately to our Midlothian dental office and be sure to bring the tooth with you.

Broken Tooth (Trauma Related)

Call your dentist as soon as possible. If you are able, try to locate the broken piece of the tooth and bring it with you to your appointment. Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of the mouth to help reduce swelling. Then proceed to our Midlothian dental office as soon as possible so our team can evaluate the damage and provide the appropriate treatment.

Object Lodged Between Your Teeth

Call your dentist if the object cannot be safely removed. Try to gently remove the object using dental floss. Avoid using sharp or pointed instruments such as picks, knives, or other tools, as these can damage your teeth or gums. If you are unable to remove the object, please contact our Midlothian dental office so we can schedule an appointment and safely address the issue.
