Tooth Sensitivity: Causes, Symptoms and Solutions

As a family dental practice that's been serving the greater Richmond area for over 35 years, we tend to see an uptick in tooth sensitivity complaints in the Summer - whether it’s from children or adults. This phenomenon can be puzzling for many, but it’s actually fairly common.

Understanding gum and tooth sensitivity causes and symptoms, painful tooth sensitivity, recognizing the symptoms, and knowing when to seek professional help can ensure you enjoy the season without discomfort.

Causes of Summer Tooth Sensitivity

Temperature Extremes: One of the primary reasons for heightened tooth sensitivity in

the summer is the frequent consumption of cold foods and beverages. Ice cream,

chilled drinks, and popsicles can trigger a sharp, sudden pain in sensitive teeth. The

contrast between the hot outdoor temperatures and the cold treats can exacerbate this

sensitivity.

Dehydration: Hot weather often leads to increased dehydration, which decreases saliva

production. Saliva is crucial for neutralizing acids and providing a protective barrier for

your teeth. Reduced saliva can make your teeth more susceptible to sensitivity.

Increased Acidic Intake: Summer is a time for increased acidic citrus fruits and chilled

soda beverages that can erode tooth enamel, leading to increased sensitivity. The loss

of enamel exposes the underlying dentin, which contains tiny tubules that connect to the

nerves inside your teeth.

Bruxism: Stress from various summer activities, such as traveling or hosting events, can

increase teeth grinding or clenching, known as bruxism. This condition can wear down

enamel and expose dentin, contributing to sensitivity.

Dental Procedures: Teeth whitening is very popular in the summer and can sometimes

cause temporary sensitivity due to the agents penetrating the enamel and reaching the

dentin layer, where nerve endings are located.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Tooth sensitivity can manifest in several ways, including:

  • Sharp, sudden pain when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks.
  • Discomfort during brushing or flossing.
  • Occasional throbbing or aching pain in one or more teeth.
  • These symptoms can be mild to severe and may occur intermittently or persistently.

When to Call the Dentist

While some tooth sensitivity can be managed with over-the-counter products and home

remedies, it’s important to know when to seek professional help. Here are some

indicators that it’s time to call Vacca Family Dentistry in Midlothian:

1. Persistent Pain: If you experience ongoing pain that doesn’t subside with the

avoidance of triggers, it’s crucial to consult your dentist. Persistent pain can

indicate underlying issues such as cavities, gum disease, cracked teeth, or

infection.

2. Severe Sensitivity: If your sensitivity is severe and affects your daily activities, a

dental evaluation is necessary. Your dentist can determine the cause and

recommend appropriate treatments.

3. Visible Damage: Noticeable changes in your teeth, such as cracks, chips, or

visible decay, warrant immediate attention. These issues can worsen over time

and lead to more serious dental problems.

4. Gum Recession: If you observe that your gums are pulling away from your

teeth, exposing more of the tooth or its root, it’s important to get a professional

assessment. Gum recession can increase sensitivity and lead to other dental

health concerns.
