Healthy Tips for Preventing Childhood Cavities
Protecting little smiles, one habit at a time.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children, yet it’s almost entirely preventable. According to the CDC, more than 50% of kids between ages 6 and 8 have had at least one cavity in their baby teeth. Even more concerning—untreated cavities can lead to pain, infections, and even impact a child’s ability to eat, speak, or learn.
The good news? With just a few simple habits, you can help keep your child’s smile strong and cavity-free.
1. Brush Teeth Twice a Day for Two Minutes
Begin brushing as soon as that first tooth appears. Kids should brush twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste. Until they’re around 7 or 8, they’ll need help or supervision to make sure they’re doing a thorough job.
2. Develop Good Flossing Habits Early
Flossing is just as important as brushing. It helps clean the spaces between teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach—and where cavities often start.
3. How to Handle Your Child's Sugar Intake
Sugary snacks and drinks (even juice!) can feed the bacteria that cause cavities. Try to limit sweets, avoid sticky snacks like fruit gummies, and encourage water between meals.
4. Ask Your Dentist About Sealants
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the back teeth. They can prevent 80% of cavities in molars—and kids without them have nearly three times more cavities, according to the CDC.
